Narrative: students come from various different
backgrounds and speak different languages. They have a variety of educational
levels in their native language.
Rationale: students will introduce themselves in
various settings and will learn how to use the phrases that native speakers use
in these situations. Students need to identify appropriate language to use in
formal and informal situations and need to know how to small talk and ask questions
when they meet new people.
Goal: students will be able to listen to key
words and target language in basic conversations with community members, songs,
and video clips as well as asking and answering questions.
Objectives:

Procedure:
Warm up (15
minutes): teacher gives each student some questions to ask their
partners/classmates. Students pair up and ask each other’s questions. Teacher
observes this activity.
- Introduction
(15 minutes): teacher introduces herself to the class and elicits introductions
from the class. For example,
Teacher: Hi, my
name is Marshella. What’s your name?
Student: My name
is ____________.
Teacher: Nice to
meet you, Sarah.
Student: Nice to
meet you too.
Teacher: How are
you today?
Student: I’m
fine and you?
Teacher: I’m
very well. Thank you.
Teacher writes
this short dialogue on the board and students can add sentences or words to
their dialogue.
- Pre-activity
(10 minutes): teacher shows a Youtube video and pre-teaches some vocabulary
words in a dialogue.
- Activity (20
minutes):
1. Students listen to the dialogue once and fill in the blanks on a handout with the transcript from the dialogue. Students compare the answers with the partner.
