Lesson Plan #4 - Reading


Narrative: students come from various different backgrounds and speak different languages. They have a variety of educational levels in their native language.

Rationale: students need to learn how to read general information and specific details. Students need to learn how to read information and explain it to someone else in their own words.

Goal: students will be able to read short stories and answer questions related to the story.

Objectives:
-       Students will be able to ask and answer questions on a “Find Someone Who” handout.
-       Students will be able to answer questions about Claudio’s and Chul’s stories on a cloze handout.
-       Students will be able to match vocabulary words to their corresponding pictures.

Materials: pictures, vocabulary word cards, Claudio’s&Chul’s stories, handouts

Procedure:
1.     Introduction (15 minutes): students move around the room and fill out “find someone who” handout by asking questions to their classmates.
2.     Pre-teach vocabulary words (10 minutes): teacher shows some pictures and students match the pictures with the words.
3.     Activity (20 minutes): students read the short stories about Claudio and Chul. After reading, students answer the questions about these two short stories without looking at the stories.

Evaluation:
-       Teacher observes students as they find out information about other students.
-       Teacher assesses students’ vocabulary skills.
-       Teacher monitors as students answer the questions about the short stories.

Chul’s Story:
Hi, my name's Chul and I come from Korea. I'm a businessman and I work in Seoul. I'm married and have two children, Min-Jee - a girl, and Dak-Ho a boy. I like in a small house in the suburbs. I take the subway to work from Monday to Friday. I like playing golf in my free time. I don't like singing karaoke!
