Lesson Plan #3 - Speaking


Narrative: students come from various different backgrounds and speak different languages. They have a variety of educational levels in their native language.

Rationale: students need to learn how to ask questions with how and when.

Goal: students will be able to ask various questions using appropriate question words and verbs.

Objectives:
-       Students will be able to exercise their background knowledge to fill sentences on the board.
-       Students will be able to ask questions using new vocabulary and proper grammar.
-       Students will be able to respond to questions with correct verbs and sentences.
-       Students will be able to role play a real situation.

Materials:Stand Out Basic Grammar Challenge book (Unit 2, pg. 27-28)

Procedure:
1.     Review (15 minutes): students review phrases from last class’ dialogue by introducing themselves and brainstorming more questions that are usually asked during conversations.
2.     Practice (20 minutes): students do exercise D, E, F from the book.

Exercise D. Match the question with the answer.
1. How’s the weather?                                    a. At 1:00 P.M.
2. When’s English class?                                 b. It’s windy.
3. How’s English class?                                  c. She’s fine.
4. How’s Maria?                                             d. It’s difficult.

Exercise E. Write How or When.
1.     _____ is English class?  It’s at 10:00 a.m.
2.     _____ is work? It’s at 4:00 p.m.
3.     _____ is the teacher? He is fine.
4.     _____ is dinner? It’s at 8:00 p.m.
5.     _____ is English class? It’s easy.
6.     _____ is the movie? It’s at 9:00 p.m.
7.     _____ is the weather? It’s cloudy.
8.     _____ is Franco? He is very happy.

Exercise F. Answer the questions about your class.
1.     When is English class?
2.     How is the weather today?
3.     How is English class?
4.     When is lunch?
5.     How is the book?
3.     Application (20 minutes): students pair up and role play with their partner asking and answering questions using how and when.

Evaluation:
Formative:
-       Teacher assesses background knowledge of students’ speaking skills and grammar knowledge.
-       Teacher assesses students’ ability to complete the exercises.
-       Teacher assesses students’ ability to ask and answer questions used in conversations.
Summative: teacher assesses students’ ability to add new questions when introducing themselves.

Extension: review unit 2 of Stand Out Grammar Challenge page 15-27. Practice vocabulary words and phrases.
